Ramapo Mountain State Forest – Enjoy several miles of hiking and walking trails centered on 120-acre Ramapo Lake. Be sure to check out breathtaking views at the Lookout and Stone Tower. Ramapo Forest is also a great place for canoeing, kayaking, and birdwatching.

The Van Allen House – This house was built in 1748 and is famous for the guest it housed on July 14, 1777 – George Washington. Reserve a tour and see how life was lived on a farm settlement in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Rhino Theatre – Feel like a part of the action at this intimate community venue. Interesting Facts about Oakland, NJ

Oakland is actually considered a suburb of New York City.

During the 1940s-1960s, a bungalow colony existed in west Oakland, which was near a boxer’s training camp. Colony residents would often see famous boxers, such as Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson, running down the road as they trained.

Oakland was incorporated in 1902. The name came from the preponderance of large white oak trees throughout the area.
