There’s no need to travel to Scotland for a world-class course. Deemed “the jewel of New Jersey,” Ballyowen is often number one in course ratings for the entire state and region. As a bonus, there’s gourmet dining, a spa resort and a wine cellar which hosts tastings on the resort’s grounds.

Rock Spring Golf Course, West Orange, Essex County, New Jersey
This course has the distinction of being one of only two courses in the entire country designed by the legendary Seth Raynor which are open to the public. Rock Spring only transitioned to a municipal course a few years ago, making it an extra special treat to play this 6600 yard par 71.

As the name implies, this course is perfect for those who long for higher elevations, with cliffs and crags. It’s definitely not the leisurely stroll around the links, so expect to use a cart for this challenging course that includes several blind spots.

Lake Lackawanna Golf Club, Stanhope, Sussex County, New Jersey
Here’s a course worth noting because it’s the opposite of some of the others on the list. A 9-hole course, this one is less challenging but better for both families and newcomers to the game. Those pressed for time will enjoy this very walkable course that will let you get some practice in without spending all day on the greens.

Enjoy three different 9-hole courses, this former farmland features a gorgeous pond and plenty of wildlife from herons to turtles. This North Jersey course is known for challenging features and layout designed by architect Byron Phoebus. Don’t miss the “Shortest Par Five in the World” which is a bit deceptive in its name, but unforgettable with its island green.
